Will the
boxes warp or crack if they are taken from a humid climate to a dry climate?
Q: Are living ancient cedar trees cut down to make the boxes?
A: No. Our raw material for the boxes come from a number of sources.
Some of the wood we use is leftovers from making shakes. It's now been banned, but until
recently, shake plants would just burn it. We also find wonderful old pieces of driftwood
that have their own character. We also find pieces of trees left behind when the tree was
first harvested. The way we craft our boxes also conserves the wood, since the inside
of one box often becomes the beginning of another. One of the guiding ideas behind
the our creation of these boxes is to show what a resource this material, once wasted, can
be.
Q, How will someone
know how to open the box if I send it as a gift?
A. Each box comes with a brochure that explains how to open the box
with both pictures and words. The brochure also explains how the boxes are
crafted, and how the technique we use fits into the traditional and honored uses
of cedar in the Pacific Northwest.
Q. Can my box be
cleaned?
A. Yes, but don't use any detergents or cleaning solutions. Simply use
a damp cloth to wipe off the finish then dry it with a clean soft cloth.
Q. Will the boxes warp
or crack if they are taken from a humid climate to a dry climate?
A. This should not be a problem. Each box is made from single piece of
wood, so it expands and contracts evenly. Beyond that, and even more important, is the
fact that this ancient wood is well seasoned, which means the moisture content is low.
With practically zero moisture content, there's nothing in the wood that really reacts to
climate changes.
